Diplomatic passports are issued by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The list of people who can hold such a passport is set by decree.
What is the purpose of a diplomatic passport?
A diplomatic passport is a travel document that makes it easier for its holder to travel to certain countries to carry out their duties.
It is issued for a maximum period of ten years. It may only be used for the purposes for which it was issued.
It is returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when its validity expires or when its use is no longer justified.
In exceptional circumstances and for reasons of overriding necessity or urgency, a passport may be issued with a maximum validity of one year.
The diplomatic passport certifies the identity and French nationality of its holder.
What are its main features?
The diplomatic passport includes the following information:
- The last name, first and middle names in the order given in vital records, date and place of birth, sex and, if the person concerned so requests, the name authorised by law
- Eye colour, height
- Nationality
- Dates of issue and expiry
- Passport number
- It also includes the holder's digital signature and image.
In order to facilitate the authentication of the holder of the diplomatic passport, this document includes an electronic component containing the data mentioned above, with the exception of the signature, as well as the digitised images of the fingerprints of two of the holder's fingers.
It also includes an optical reading zone containing the following information:
- family name
- first and middle name(s)
- sex
- date of birth and nationality of the holder
- type of document
- issuing State
- document number
- and its expiry date
There is also an urgent diplomatic passport, which is issued on an exceptional basis for reasons of overriding necessity or urgency.
The electronic component, which is a contactless chip, has security features designed to protect the holder against the risks of intrusion, misappropriation, and alteration.
What is the role of the ANTS?
The Agency acquires and provides the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the equipment needed to manage and check the authenticity and validity of the passport and also maintains that equipment (or has it maintained).
The ANTS designs, operates, and administers the systems for processing applications and issuing passports.
