Mission passport

Mission passports are issued to civil servants and military personnel who are going on a mission abroad or are posted abroad and do not hold a diplomatic or service passport.

What is the purpose of a mission passport?

It may only be used for the purposes for which it was issued. Its holder must return it to the issuing authority if they no longer meet the conditions for holding one.

The validity of the mission passport cannot be extended. All new applications therefore require a new document.

The mission passport must be returned when the new document is issued.

Exception: If the validity period of a visa affixed to the first mission passport extends past the passport’s validity period.

Holding a mission passport does not exempt you from obtaining a visa to travel to certain countries.

What are its main features?

The mission passport is valid for 5 years, regardless of the duration of the mission or assignment. It is issued free of charge (in accordance with article 953 of the French General Tax Code).

It includes:

  • The last name, first and middle names in the order given in vital records, date and place of birth, sex and, if the person concerned so requests, the name authorised by law
  • Eye colour, height
  • Nationality
  • The domicile or residence or, where applicable, the commune to which the person is attached, or the address of the host organisation with which the person is domiciled
  • The dates of issue and expiry of the document, and the issuing authority
  • The passport number
  • The holder's handwritten signature and digital image

Applicants must go in person to the place where the application was filed  to collect their passport.

What is the role of the ANTS?

The Agency designs, operates, and administers the systems for processing applications and issuing passports.
