The vehicle registration certificate replaced the “Carte Grise” on 15 April 2009.
This is a secure document, sent directly to the registrant's home address with signature on delivery.
What is the purpose of a vehicle registration certificate?
A registration certificate allows the vehicle to travel on the roads and be identified throughout its lifetime. A vehicle needs one in order to be driven.
What are the main features of a registration certificate?
Assigned to a vehicle, the certificate includes:
- The registration number
- The identity of the vehicle owner(s)
- The vehicle's characteristics,
- Its compliance (technical inspections, etc.)
- The date of first registration
It may be requested during a police stop or customs check.
What is a provisional registration certificate?
The provisional registration certificate (CPI) is a temporary document that allows you to drive your car in France while you are waiting to receive your permanent registration certificate.
It is issued either at the end of your online vehicle registration process, or by the authorised and/or approved sales professional after the vehicle registration process has been completed.
It is valid for one month, except for rental vehicles.
What is the role of the ANTS?
The Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés is responsible for managing and maintaining the computer application, the Système d'Immatriculation des Véhicules (SIV), which records applications for vehicle registration certificates.
