Obtain your digital identity when you collect your French national identity card (CNI)

You have started the process for renewing your ID card. You can now activate your France Identité digital identity and certify it when you collect your ID card from the town hall.
 

How do you obtain your digital identity when you collect your ID card?

When you receive a SMS informing you that your ID card is available in the town hall, you need to:

1. Download the France Identité app (go to the app download link);
2. Go back to your SMS and click the link;
3. Make a request to create your digital identity via the app. A QR Code will be generated;
4. Go to your town hall and show this QR Code.

 

24 to 48h after your visit to the town hall, you will be informed by email of the result of your request to activate your digital identity. You can then finish creating it:

1. Scan the front of your credit card-sized ID card;
2. Create your personal code (avoid choosing a code that is easy to guess - 000000, 123456, etc.);
3. Link your phone's unlock mode to your digital identity.

Now, you have created your France Identité digital identity! What's more, it is already certified.
 

What exactly is France Identité used for?

France Identité is a mobile app that lets you prove your identity. It is free and optional and works thanks to your French national identity card (credit card size). It is not intended to replace the physical ID card or existing administrative processes but to provide new alternatives for online and in-person uses. To date, it enables you to:

• Authenticate to an online service via FranceConnect;
• Create a single-use identification document, which is an alternative to a photocopy of your ID card;
• Obtain your digital driving licence;
• Prove your identity in-person, in particular when travelling on trains;
• Activate your carte Vitale (French health insurance card) app.
   

What exactly is France Identité certified digital identity used for?

Certified digital identity enables you to carry out administrative processes remotely that until now required you to physically go to prove your identity, and it offers a high level of security. To date, it enables you to:

• Log on to services available via FranceConnect+ (MaPrimeRénov’ ((French State energy renovation aid), MonCompteFormation (My training account), create a business, etc.);
• Create proxy voting 100% online.
   

A new reason when renewing your ID card to use France Identité

In response to French citizens' interest in France Identité and its uses, the pilot run rolled out enables you to renew your French national identity card (CNI).
 

Access to this pilot run is free. It is supervised and regulated to ensure that applications are handled smoothly, without lengthening the time taken to obtain ID cards or overloading town halls and the identification document issuance chain.
 

This early renewal is subject to the following conditions:

• Be aged 18 or over;
• Do not already hold a credit card-sized ID card;
• Make a pre-application on the ants.gouv.fr portal;
• be able to return your old ID card when you collect your new one.
