School trips: you no longer need a passport to travel to the UK

Since 28 December 2023, French school pupils can travel to the UK with a valid French national identity card.

This measure applies exclusively to young French citizens aged 18 or under who travel on an educational trip. Passports are still compulsory for pupils of non-European nationalities, but they no longer need a visa. When entering the UK, accompanying adults must present a form that lists all the participants of the trip.

Does this measure apply to accompanying adults?

No, since Brexit, adults must present a valid passport on entering the UK.

What's the reason for this new measure?

As of 1st October 2021, it had become a real administrative headache for school teachers to organize school trips to the UK.

The result: the number of school trips fell sharply. According to Euronews, the decline was as much as 66%, based on the EU country.

In March 2023, after discussions with the French President, Rishi Sunak, UK Prime Minister promised to relax the rules for school trips so that French pupils would visit the UK once again.
