Thanks to France Identité-certified digital identity, you no longer need to go to a police station or gendarmerie to have your identity checked when appointing a proxy to vote for you.
These new provisions aim to make the proxy voting application procedure easier and, at the same time, ensure this method is secure and reliable.
How does electronic proxy voting work?
You first need to create your digital identity and then have it certified by your local town hall. Once you have received your voter number, you must:
- Apply for proxy voting on the Maprocuration site (in French) with FranceConnect authentication
- Select online checking with France Identité
- Scan the QR code displayed on the screen
- Enter your personal code and read your contactless French identity card via NFC
Please note, you only have 20 minutes to check your identity with France Identité. Once this period has timed out, you will need to have your identity checked by an authorized authority (police officer, gendarme, consular officer) to validate your proxy voting.
Why is certified digital identity required to electronically appoint a proxy to vote for you?
When you wish to appoint a proxy to vote for you, you usually have to have your identity checked in a police station or gendarmerie. Thanks to certified digital identity, this identity check can be carried out remotely, meaning you do not have to go to a police station or gendarmerie.
Any user that has a France Identité digital identity can apply to have it certified via their app and then go to a local town hall that uses this system. The user's identity is then checked in-person by a municipal administration officer who compares their fingerprints with the ones integrated in the identification document presented.
